Commenting on Blogs

After receiving Jennifer's e-mail to comment on blogs, I decided to try Allegany County's site. I read several of the blogs and commented on one. It was fun to read what others had to say about the 23 Things, and some of the blogs were really creative. I had read several from our system, and commented on one. There were quite a few with neat pictures and other additions to make the blogs attractive.

23 Things

I finally finished The 23 Things. At first it was intimidating and I thought, I'll never finish this! As time went on and Jennifer came up and helped us, things went much better. I really did learn many things about RSS feeds, Blogging, YouTube, Flickr, etc. A "techie" I'll never be, but at least I know what's out there.

And, yes, I would sign up for another program like this one. I need to learn all I can about new technology so I can help the patrons.

Project Gutenburg

I didn't spend too much time on this site, but I did search the online catalog and looked for books by Mark Twain and found many titles. I didn't download any books, but I did read several pages of Jokes for all occasions online. I still prefer a book in hand and a nice, comfortable chair!

Podcasts

I checked out the Podcast Alley and Yahoo Podcasts sites. I liked the Yahoo site better as it seemed easier to use. The book review from Book Voyages regarding children's literature was interesting and I added this to my RSS feeds.

YouTube

I watched the Hurrican Dean video on YouTube, and one on Yahoo Video. They are fun to watch, and it is instant access on your PC. For an aspiring "Walt Disney", this probably would be a great place to start practicing with homemade videos and sound tracks and get it to the public. Who knows, someone may pick it up and Voila! you're on your way to Hollywood! I suppose librarians could use this to inform the public about our services, but I'm not so sure anyone would watch it.

Web 2.0 awards list

I used the short lists of awards and I had used several of these sites while completing the 23 things. I looked at some of the others that were on the awards list and found them to be interesting too. Also, on the cover of the August 27 Newsweek there is "The Facebook Effect". In looking at the article, I think it's going to be real difficult to keep up with all the new technology. At this point, I'm glad to be involved in the 23 things program as it is helping to familiarize me with new technology.

ZoHo and Google Doc

I don't know that I would use this site for my personal use; however, I could let the patrons know it exists and that the documents are free. The more I know, the better I can instruct the patrons.

SandBox wiki

http://marylandlibrariessandbox.pbwiki.com/SandBox

I posted a blog on SandBox. There were several "elaborate" blogs, and they were real interesting. However, I'm just a Plain Jane!

Wikis and the libraries

Since Wiki's are collaborative websites, searching and browsing for info should be easier for us and for our patrons.

Online Imaging

Meez is a fun site, but my computer wouldn't work with this site. I was able to do one of the images on another computer, and I could spend hours changing hairstyles, clothes and backgrounds.

Future of libraries

Libraries are changing rapidly and, apparently, are going to go into super changing mode very soon. We have gone from 1.0, paper and pencil, to 2.0, digital, in a few years. Now it looks like 3.0, 3 D libraries are coming, and 4.0 is on the drawing board - oops, digital board! It seems to me that this is an exciting time for libraries; and according to the articles I've been reading, we have to learn the new technology and be able to teach the patrons how to get along in the digital world.

Technorati

I found the Technorati site a bit intimidating. I searched in posts, tags and directory and found the "tag" search better for specifics. There were over 22,000 hits in "posts". Anyway, with more practice (when time allows) I probably could find lots of interesting reads.

Del.icio.us

I might try this site to help plan a vacation. I think it would be fun to find favorites of others who went on a similiar trip. This is an easy way to create "social bookmarks", but I'm not sure how it would work for research assistance.

Quote of the day

Today I was checking out the quote of the day on Blogline, and found this gem by Jef Raskin, posted Aug. 10, 2007: "Imagine if every Thursday your shoes exploded if you tied them together the usual way. This happens to us all the time with computers, and nobody thinks of complaining." How 'bout that?

Library Thing

I cataloged five books which was quite easy. This would be a fun site for book discussions.

Rollyo

This is a neat site, and easy to use. I was interested in home repairs and remodelling and found many links. This was much quicker and I like the idea of "One Stop Shopping".

Library related blogs

I found the About Literature, Library Journal Best Books, and It's All Good blogs to be interesting and useful. I like the RSS feeds on Bloglines to find info. I had a good time reading the quote of the day, and word of the day. If I had lots of time, I probably would spend hours on these various sites and learn all sorts of things. However... a patron calls.

RSS Feeds

After viewing the CNET video and RSS in Plain English, I thought, O.K., here goes nothing!! Anyway, the Blogline setup went well. Subscribing to the different feeds took more time, but I now have subscribed to 18 feeds. This should make it easier to find current info quickly. Hopefully, this will be another "tool" to use in my job.

Mashups

I checked out the Flickr Color Picker, Montager and Mappr sites. My favorite was the Flickr. The Wikipedia article about mashups was very helpful. The Librarian's trading card site was interesting, too, and I especially liked the poster created by the librarian. She was reading to her two sons.

My favorite slogan is "So many books, so little time!"

Lifelong learning

Today I learned to set goals and how to achieve them. I liked the 7 1/2 one that tells us to PLAY.
